KEY WEST, Florida — A man died while scuba diving in the Florida Keys near Key West.
Authorities told CDNN that Richard McCoy, Jr., 51, of Cypress, Texas died while scuba diving at the site of the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a Navy ship scuttled by tourism promoters in May to lure divers to the area.
Witnesses said McCoy, who flew Florida as part of an organized dive trip, encountered problems at a depth of about 30 meters.
Two dive instructors attempted to rescue McCoy but he stopped breathing during an emergency ascent about seven meters from the surface.
Attempts to revive McCoy onboard the dive boat failed and he was later pronounced dead after paramedics took him to a local hospital.
Authorities said McCoy's scuba diving equipment will be examined as part of an investigation to determine how he died.
