A scuba diver suffering from the bends was airlifted to hospital yesterday afternoon.The diver, a police officer, was participating in a training exercise when he was injured.
Officials said bad weather forced the Chivenor's Sea King rescue helicopter crew to take the scuba diving accident victim to Wirral for medical treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.
Normally, injured scuba divers are taken to Plymouth.
"We should have gone to Plymouth but the weather was so bad, with low cloud and rain, we had to go up to the Wirral," said Chivenor's Flt Lt Jon Evans.
