A scuba diver who illegally entered the wreck of the Jan Heweliusz car ferry in the Baltic Sea last Saturday is still missing and presumed dead.Authorities told CDNN the tragic dive was organized by Barracuda, a retail dive store located in Stargard Szczecinski in northwestern Poland.
According to unconfirmed reports, seven Polish nationals who were diving with Barracuda entered the wreck on Saturday afternoon but one of the divers never made it back out.
The German dive boat captain who took the divers to the wreck site failed to alert authorities of a missing diver emergency until late Saturday evening, hours after the scuba diving accident.
Fifty-five people died when the Jan Heweliusz car ferry sank off the island of Rugen in January 1993.
Despite banning recreational scuba divers from entering the wreck, the site has become popular with wreck divers who often ignore the ban.
