POINT LOMA, Californa (30 Aug 2008) — Two scuba divers were severely injured off Point Loma after a rapid out-of-air ascent.
Authorities told CDNN the victims, a man and a woman in their mid-30s, were scuba diving about one to two miles off Point Loma when the male diver ran out of air.
From a depth of about 22 meters (75 feet), the divers made a rapid shared-air emergency ascent that caused decompression sickness, a potentially fatal condition.
San Diego city lifeguards took the divers to Quivira Basin were they were transferred to ambulances and rushed to UCSD Medical Center for emergency treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.
Officials said both divers were conscious but the male was "not doing as well as the female."
Police said the scuba diving accident is under investigation.
